Colleagues and family members of Stephen T. Sonis, DMD, DMSc, gathered on Wednesday, July 19, to celebrate Sonis' many years of service at BWH. Sonis, who is stepping down as chief, Division of Oral Medicine, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry, will continue to serve as a senior surgeon at BWH, as well as the chief of the Division of Oral Medicine, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Professor and Chair of the Department of Oral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. “It's difficult to describe the magnitude of Steve's accomplishments in a few words,” said Joseph W. Costa, Jr., DMD, who assumes Sonis’ role at BWH. “He is such an understanding person. People have always approached him with their problems. He always has time for words of welcome or praise, and always shows genuine interest in his employees and colleagues.” At the dinner, the creation of the Stephen T. Sonis, DMD, DMSc Annual Oral Medicine Lecture was formally announced. This annual lecture will be held at BWH for faculty and residents, as well as Harvard School of Dental Medicine faculty and students.
