The first Department of Medicine Resident Research Program was held on Thursday, May 18. Twenty-two different posters were presented on various research projects, including molecular biology, development of new therapeutic agents, measuring changes in renal function in cardiac transplant patients, trends in cancer screening, and providing health care in Honduras. These original presentations reported the residents' activities during their six-month research block, in which they completed a research project with a mentor in a lab or field project of their choosing. The poster presentations give residents an opportunity to share the broad spectrum of new scientific knowledge they have uncovered during that time. The research program has proved to be a great added value to the education of residents interested in academic careers, and has made the BWH Internal Medicine Residency Program the leading innovator in the development of clinician-scientists. Drs. Eugene Braunwald and Marshall Wolf initiated the program 28 years ago, and a large number of publications and research careers have been born or developed since that time. For more information on this program and other educational programs for Internal Medicine residents, contact Dr. Bruce Levy at the Department of Medicine Residency office at ext. 5775.
