More than 70 members of Team Brigham, including 12 hospital employees, approached the start line in Hopkinton with their eyes set on the finish line and their hearts set on building BWH’s future. This is a group of runners who not only stepped up to the challenge of running 26.2 miles, but also committed to the goal of raising $375,000 for BWH. Their finish times tell only one story. Their race shirts - that proudly read “Brigham and Women’s Hospital 2002 Marathon Team” - tell another story of selfless spirit and dedication to running for a cause much greater than themselves.
Combined, the members of Team Brigham have logged about 28,800 miles in preparation for (Marathon Monday. Each Saturday, since December, a slice of their weekend mornings has been spent running up to 20 miles, in addition to their weekday workouts. On top of their difficult training regimen, each member of Team Brigham has generated support and awareness of BWH’s community health initiatives through their fundraising efforts. Their hard work training and soliciting funds culminated in a top Team Brigham performance at the 106th running of the Boston Marathon.
“What makes each year better is the mixture of alumni and new runners,” said Linda Werman, coordinator, Team Brigham. “Our runners forge friendships that go beyond the 20-week marathon program. They bring enthusiasm and creativity that helps build a strong sense of team and keeps their supporters involved. Their desire to be connected to others has truly been inspiring,” she added.
