New and experienced runners who join BWH's Team Stork will gain much more than the amazing accomplishment of completing the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. They'll also get expert training and other perks along the way.
For starters, team members will train with two of the best in the business: Susan Hurley of CharityTeams and John Furey of Fitcorp.
A longtime personal trainer and coach and founder of CharityTeams, Hurley has run the past five Boston Marathons and finished the NYC Marathon with a personal best of 3:20. "CharityTeams provides the whole package of support to runners, including recruitment and fundraising help, coaching and support on race week and race day," she said. "And we guarantee fun-we're known as a social event with a running problem."
Though runners don't have to be hospital employees to join the team, Hurley notes that many BWHers run the marathon annually. "They have great energy and enthusiasm for the hospital's mission," she said.
An elite trainer for Boston Marathoners at Fitcorp, Furey has worked with Brigham runners since 1998. He was named 2011 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, and in 2005, Men's Journal magazine ranked him among the top 100 trainers in the U.S.
"I enjoy helping runners, particularly novices, conquer the Boston Marathon," Furey said. "I personalize training to each runner's experience level, schedule and health history. My coaching style focuses on injury prevention, quality over quantity and utilizing non-impact methods of training to improve fitness."
Other benefits of joining Team Stork include an official number for the Boston Marathon, Team Stork-branded apparel, fundraising assistance, bus service on Marathon Monday and a heated tent at the stwarting line, among other perks. BWH will also cover runners' $300 entry fee. Each runner commits to raise a minimum of $5,000 for healthier babies and moms at BWH.
Runners of all experience levels are encouraged to join the team or learn more at www.teamstork.org. Contact Katie Kilkelly at 617-424-4191 or teamstork@partners.org with questions.
