During their careers thus far, 2012 Deland Fellows Heather Bello and Sara Adland have witnessed many changes in health care, both at the state and national levels.
Bello had a front row seat to the landmark changes in Massachusetts during health care reform when she worked at the State House. After seeing access greatly expand, she chose to focus her attention on researching and developing new and innovative ways to deliver care through the use of technology, in the hopes of making the care process more efficient and in the long run, less costly. Adland's career is rooted in Health Behavior and Health Education and has taken her across the country, most recently to Washington, D.C., where she worked as a senior associate in Government Affairs for Families USA.
Bello and Adland began the next phase in their careers this summer at BW/F as this year's Deland Fellows. The one-year administrative experience prepares professionals to be leaders of health care institutions by exposing them to the operations of an academic and community-based medical center.
Through the fellowship, Bello and Adland are each paired with a member of the senior leadership team. Bello's mentor is Sanjay Pathak, MBA, vice president of Surgical Services and Imaging, and Adland's mentor is Michael Gustafson, MD, MBA, chief operating officer at Faulkner Hospital.
"This fellowship is a unique experience that will make us better health care leaders going forward in our career by allowing us to understand the fundamentals and rigors of management," said Adland, whose professional experience has also included working as a senior health aide for Kentucky Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-3).
"The Brigham is a top health leader in the nation," said Bello. "To see how this organization is responding to the new health care policies being implemented at both the state and national level is an amazing opportunity and learning experience. We are very lucky."
Bello is a graduate of Boston College and received her master's degree in Health Policy and Management from Harvard University earlier this year. Adland graduated from Haverford College and earned a master's degree in Public Health from the University of Michigan.

The Deland Fellowship in Health Care and Society honors the memory of former board president F. Stanton Deland Jr., a key figure during the merger of four teaching hospitals into the present-day BWH. During the extensive planning, he inspired all parties to advance a unified objective: to provide premier health care and promote innovations in clinical care, research and education.
