September is National Preparedness Month-a timely opportunity to brush up on the emergency response policies and procedures for BW/F and your own family's plan in the event of an emergency.
"We are a level-one trauma center, and we are committed to protecting patients and staff in case of a disaster inside or outside of the institution," said Barry Wante, BW/F's Emergency Management director. "If we follow the plans in place, we are much better able to serve our patients and assist our colleagues during emergency situations. Knowing our family members, loved ones and homes are safe also positions us to respond effectively to an emergency."
Wante urges BW/F staff to review the institution's Crisis Resource Manual, which can be found on BWHPikeNotes.org, for emergency response procedures. If you are in the hospital when a Code Amber is announced, for example, you should report to or call in to your division or departmental director for instructions. He or she will act as the disaster team coordinator for each service within the hospital. You may be assigned to the personnel labor pool for a role within the hospital based on the needs of the incident.
Managers should also make sure emergency call-back numbers for staff are accurate and up-to-date.
The hospital has a 24/7 Employee Emergency Announcement Line (1-800-343-7036) that employees can call from the hospital or home for important announcements and updates during an emergency.
Emergency preparedness information sessions will be held on the mezzanine level next to the Shop on the Pike on Sept. 21, from 8 to 10 a.m., and Sept. 26, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. The Emergency Management Department will also be at the BW/F Readiness Fair on Sept. 20 in the Cabot Atrium.
