Seventeen teams and more than 150 walkers from BWH have signed up for the American Heart Association’s annual Heart Walk in Boston, which will be held Saturday, Sept. 15, on the Charles River Esplanade.
The day’s festivities will kick off at 9 a.m., with an opening ceremony at 9:45 a.m. followed by various walk-route options, including a 6-mile walk beginning at 10:30 a.m. and 1- and 2-mile walks beginning at 11 a.m.
“We’re one of the leading institutions in cardiovascular care, not only in New England, but also in the country, so it’s important for BWH to be well-represented,” said Chad MacLennan, practice manager at the Watkins Cardiovascular Clinic, who is co-leading the Brigham’s Heart Walk efforts this year with Katy Powell, operations manager for the Cardiovascular Division. “What’s really nice about this walk is that it is very family-oriented, and people are really enthusiastic and involved.”
BWH’s goal this year is to raise $50,000. There is still time to start, join or donate to a team, and MacLennan and Powell are trying to get the word out with e-mail reminders, raffle prizes and other efforts.
Funds raised support cardiovascular research, education and advocacy. The American Heart Association has raised millions of research dollars for Boston hospitals, with BWH as a top recipient of those funds.
Learn more about the Heart Walk on Wednesday, Sept. 5. An information table will be set up from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside the Shop on the Pike.
