Do you run out of energy in the afternoon? Do you want to do something good for your overall health? Try taking a walk.
That’s what Michelle Keenan tells BWHers who are looking to infuse energy into their day.
“Taking a short walk clears your head and recharges your energy,” said Keenan, director of Community Programs in the Center for Community Health and Health Equity. “It’s also good for your heart.”
Keenan is among several BWH Walking Club captains who have organized a group of co-workers to take short walks around the Longwood Medical Area as a way to add exercise to their day.
As warm weather approaches, the BWH Walking Club is gearing up for its summer season. Last week, the group, which is sponsored by the Cardiovascular Wellness Service, hosted an informational session for employees looking to join or form a walking group.
During the kick-off event, Mairead Hickey, PhD, RN, FAAN, executive vice president and chief operating officer, encouraged everyone to participate.“The group is designed specifically for our BWH employees to fit some heart-healthy exercise into the busy work day,” she said.
As part of the club, the Cardiovascular Wellness Service provides walkers with support, including newsletters, outdoor walking routes around the Longwood Medical Area, pedometers, online tools to track progress and a free T-shirt for team leaders.
