Sandra Jarrett, administrative coordinator for the Center for Clinical Investigation, considered herself an introverted employee a few years ago. She felt detached from her co-workers, and in her personal life, she was burdened by bills and escalating education debt. In 2010, she received an Association of Multicultural Members of Partners (AMMP) scholarship to help her attend Springfield College.
This year, Jarrett addressed a room full of her peers who received the AMMP scholarship in 2011. Jarrett’s story is proof that the scholarship investment paid off, not only in her career but in her personal growth.
“I can honestly say that since receiving the AMMP scholarship, my life has changed in ways I could not have anticipated,” she said.
The financial support helped Jarrett pay off tuition bills when she transferred from an online program to Springfield College, and her AMMP connections helped propel her involvement at BWH. “Being an AMMP member has given me connections I could not have attained sitting at my desk; connections to fellow BWH and Faulkner Hospital (FH) employees who I may not have ever known otherwise,” she added.
AMMP was created in 1998 to promote the advancement and achievement of multicultural professionals into leadership positions at Partners. One of the commitments of AMMP is annually awarding scholarships to a number of BWH and FH employees who demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning.
AMMP continued the tradition last month and honored 12 scholarship recipients not only for their achievements in their current roles, but also for their desire to further their careers with higher education.
“We are so proud of you and what you continue to bring to this organization,” said BW/F President Betsy Nabel, MD, who thanked the AMMP scholarship recipients. The 2011 scholarship recipients also look to the financial and personal support of AMMP to help them shape their futures. Though the award recipients each have different backgrounds, roles and fields of study, there is a common thread linking each: the desire to pursue education.
