During the annual Volunteer Recognition Breakfast, BWH honored the nearly 800 volunteers who donated their time to departments throughout the hospital during the past year.
The keynote speaker for the May 16 event was Christian Arbelaez, MD, MPH, of the Emergency Department, who spoke about his experience volunteering as part of the relief effort in Haiti and with the Indian Health Service in Gallup, New Mexico, and the important role volunteers play at BWH.
“Today we celebrate you,” said Arbelaez. “Thank you for your time, efforts and service, and for helping BWH provide its mission of patient care, education and research to the community.”
During the past year, volunteers gave their time to almost 45 departments throughout the hospital, said Shelita Bailey, director of the Office for Sponsored Staff and Volunteer Services, for a total of nearly 40,000 donated hours.
“Our volunteers donate more than just the precious gift of time,” Bailey said. “They also bring invaluable talents, and we truly appreciate everything they do.”
