Christopher Donahoe, RN, speaks with Jackie Somerville, PhD, RN, center, and Betsy Nabel, MD, at the Night Town Meeting April 6.
At the Town Meeting last December, hundreds of BWHers joined BWH President Betsy Nabel, MD, and senior leadership for the hospital’s first Town Meeting. Last week, staff who work night and weekend shifts had the same opportunity when Nabel, Mairead Hickey, PhD, RN, FAHA, executive vice president and chief operating officer, and Jackie Somerville, PhD, RN, senior vice president of Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer, hosted two separate Town Meetings.
“Town Meetings are an opportunity for you to get to know your leadership team, and for us to hear from you,” Nabel said, noting that the meetings are the direct result of feedback from last June’s Employee Opinion Survey in which BWHers indicated they wanted senior leadership to be more visible and accessible. “As we continue to think about how we can ensure the success of BW/F, we ask that you engage with us in this process. Your input during the strategic process planning is extremely important to our future.”
Nabel, Hickey and Somerville kicked off both meetings with a brief and informal State of the Hospital address, touching upon strategic planning and providing an update on Care Redesign and Patient Affordability efforts. Then, they turned to the audience for a question and answer session.
At the night Town Meeting, the question and answer session also served as a forum for employees to offer their insights to assist with cost savings at the hospital.
“I see opportunities for us to cut costs in the small things, such as using energy efficient light bulbs and improving our heating and cooling efficiencies,” said Larry Joyce of Engineering.
Julie Macvicar, RN, Meghan Roche, RN, and Eugene Pelland, RN, all had suggestions about standardizing nursing practices from floor to floor to result in less waste and greater cost savings.
“It’s that kind of mindset we’re all going to have to adopt and bring to bear throughout the strategic planning process and going forward,” Nabel said, encouraging employees to continue to submit suggestions and feedback to her via AskDrNabel@partners.org
All BWHers are also encouraged to attend the next Town Meeting: An Open Forum for BWHers, April 28, at 9 a.m., in the Bornstein Amphitheater. Employees unable to attend the meeting in person will be able to participate on a Partners PC via a live webcast. Visit www.BWHPikeNotes.org for more information.
