Hot dog in hand, BWH President Betsy Nabel selects a raffle winner at Street Beat 2010.
The sun was shining, the music was rocking and there were plenty of smiling faces in the crowd at Street Beat, BWH’s annual employee appreciation celebration, July 22.
Hundreds of BWHers enjoyed the scene in front of 15 Francis St., taking time to browse the shops set up in tents, eat lunch from one of the many food vendors and listen to the sounds of musical artists ranging from reggae to punk rock.
“Everything is wonderful. The choices in shopping, from the crafts to the jewelry, are awesome,” said Rita L. Correa, of Thoracic Surgery. “The weather is perfect, too.”
A variety of prizes, from Red Sox tickets to restaurant gift certificates, were raffled off every hour, including an impromptu donation from BWH President Betsy Nabel, MD.
“It was Dr. Nabel’s first time attending Street Beat, and, in the spirit of thanking employees, she spontaneously donated a raffle item of dinner for two at a Boston restaurant,” said Special Events Coordinator Carlen Singmaster.
Throughout the day, magicians and jugglers wove their way through the tables, providing mealtime entertainment.
“There are lots of foods to choose from, but I went with a taste that’s closer to home,” said Rodrigo Diaz-Siso, MD, of Plastic Surgery, as he dined on roast pork, rice and beans and plantains. “I’m from Venezuela, and this is the kind of food I miss.”
Others found their moments of bliss in a more tranquil setting: the Fitcorp booth returned this year, providing 10-minute massages.
“We picked up our T-shirts and came right here. I’m going to ask them to spend a little extra time on my neck!” said Adis M. Benitez, of Patient/ Family Relations, as she and her sister, Olga Benitez of General Medicine and Primary Care, eagerly waited for their massages.
