During challenging times, it is helpful to think about ways to relieve stress. The Employee Assistance Program offers the following advice to help with stress reduction.
It is common to experience a variety of emotions such as fear, confusion, worry and concern for family members. You can judge if you feel overwhelmed and you need support.
Nurture good connections to those you care about. spend time with people who support and validate you. They can be comforting and help you to sit with uncomfortable emotions.
Make active decisions about when and for how long to listen to media reports. Filter the flood of news from all its sources including radio, TV and the Internet.
Stay focused on your regular work and home activities. Routines can be calming and reassuring.
Be optimistic about challenges ahead. Stay in touch with your sources of spiritual strength and renewal (nature, prayer, yoga, meditation, etc.).
Recognize when you need help. If emotions seem overwhelming and too intense, if you have trouble focusing at work, or if you feel anxious much of the time then consider getting assistance. The EAP is available to you as a free and confidential resource.
Support each other. Parents and caregivers should take time to talk together and find ways to meet each other’s needs.
Monitor adult conversations. Be aware of what adults are saying about the earthquake or the damage. Children listen to adults’ conversations and may misinterpret what they hear, becoming unnecessarily frightened.
Limit media exposure. Protect your child from too many images and descriptions of the earthquake, including those on television, on the Internet, on radio and in the newspaper.
Reassure children that they are safe.
Take care of yourself physically.Eat healthily, get enough sleep, drink plenty of water and get proper medical care.
