A new clinical affiliation with Mass. Eye and Ear to provide general ophthalmology and subspecialty ophthalmology consultation services for BWH inpatients, trauma patients and patients in the Emergency Department begins July 1.
The medical director for the ophthalmologist service is Lloyd Paul Aiello, MD, PhD, head of the Section on Eye Research at the Joslin Diabetes Center, director of the Joslin Clinic’s Beetham Eye Institute and associate professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School.
Ankoor Shah, MD, PhD, director of Mass. Eye and Ear’s Trauma Service, leads the eye trauma response team that includes several Mass. Eye and Ear surgeons.
Inpatient call coverage is provided by two attending ophthalmologists, Sheila Borboli-Gerogiannis, MD, and Kenneth Chang, MD. Don C. Bienfang, MD, chief of Neuro-ophthalmology at BWH, continues to be part of the inpatient consult service. Mass. Eye and Ear residents, fellows and Joslin fellows contribute to team coverage.
Mass. Eye and Ear physicians will be on the LMR, benefiting both BWH clinicians and patients by enabling enhanced electronic access and communication between referring doctors and ophthalmologists.
To request an ophthalmology consult, page #2-OPHT (#2-6748). The backup page is to call the Mass. Eye and Ear operator at 617-523-7900, and then dial “0” to go directly to a live operator 24/7.
After July 1, to ensure continuity of care, patients discharged from the BWH Emergency Department, the trauma or an inpatient unit who require follow-up ophthalmology services will be treated by Mass. Eye and Ear physicians at their new clinic location, One Joslin Place, Boston, 02215. The clinic telephone number is 617-573-4180.
