Plans are in place to replace the floor of the Nesson Pike from Carrie Hall to the far end of the Cabot Atrium, replacing the current vinyl material with premium rubber flooring that is softer on the feet, more durable and easier to maintain and clean.
“This is the same floor we have in the Shapiro Center and our ED, ultimately making one long hallway that connects our entire campus made from the same, comfortable flooring,” said Arthur Mombourquette, vice president of Support Services.
This project is planned over seven phases, between July 25 and Sept. 10, with the Pike remaining passable during high-traffic daytime hours as the work is confined to overnights and Saturdays. Offices and clinical areas adjacent to the work sites will not be affected.
The flooring, manufactured by Lawrence-based Nora Rubber Flooring, is designed to soften signs of normal traffic with excellent wear resistance. With its non-glare finish of flecks and clusters of color, the flooring is slip-resistant. It is environmentally friendly, too.
“Our plan to lay it down in phases during off hours was developed to minimize the interruption and impact on staff, patients, families and other visitors,” Mombourquette said.
Each week of work will follow the same preparation plan. Containment sections with air filters for any dust and fumes will be installed on Friday night; crews will pull up the existing floor, both the top layer and sub-flooring. From Saturday afternoon to Saturday night, workers will prep the concrete base with a skim coat to fill cracks.
On Monday and Tuesday nights, crews will lay down the new floor between 7:30 p.m. and 5 a.m., and the Pike will remain passable those days with a protective tarp covering the exposed portion of the floor during daytime hours. During the night work, alternative routes will be clearly marked, and Security staff will be on hand.
