BWH, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and South Shore Hospital this month celebrated a milestone in the construction of the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center in clinical affiliation with South Shore Hospital in South Weymouth.
Leadership from all three hospitals came together on June 9 to sign the beam that will become part of the center’s superstructure. Also attending were executives from Harbor Medical Associates. Dana-Farber’s medical oncology services will be staffed by oncologists from Harbor Medical Associates who will join Dana-Farber’s medical staff.
“We share a vision for integrated care, and that means an intense focus on patient-centeredness,” said BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, who joined DFCI President Ed Benz, MD, and SSH President Richard Aubut at the beam-signing ceremony. “That includes a constant collaboration among our clinicians, as well as one electronic medical record.”
The 20,000-square foot center is expected to welcome its first patients late in 2009. Services will include medical oncology and chemotherapy infusion, diagnostic imaging, radiation therapy, breast health services, surgical oncology consults, complementary medicine, laboratory and pharmacy services, a family resource center, a boutique, café and healing gardens.
“You don’t do something like this unless you have people who want to partner with you,” said Aubut. “Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital have shared our vision from day one of this project, to offer advanced cancer care to the people of Southeastern Massachusetts in a caring, compassionate and local setting.”
BWH’s existing and successful affiliations with South Shore Hospital include cardiovascular care, surgery, breast care, gynecology, urogynecology and reproductive medicine.
“We look forward to working with South Shore Hospital and Harbor Medical Associates to deliver the most advanced treatments and compassionate care to our patients in this community,” said Gottlieb. He thanked especially BWH’s Elena Sierra and Jack Bailey for their dedication and tireless commitment to planning for the center.
