National Time Out Day is Wednesday, June 18. The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) is partnering with the Council on Surgical and Perioperative Safety and the Joint Commission to raise awareness about the importance of conducting a safety pause immediately before any procedure begins as a universal protocol in the Operating Room, at the bedside or in an outpatient setting.
“It is so important that physicians, nurses, surgical technologists and every member of the care team involved in a procedure pause to communicate key information about the patient and procedure to prevent errors every time,” said Kristin Alt Styer, MS, RN, quality program manager for Perioperative Nursing.
The Joint Commission released the Universal Protocol in 2004 to encourage the entire surgical team to take a “time out” before any procedure. To support this protocol, AORN began sponsoring National Time Out Day to raise awareness.
Stop by a table outside the Cafeteria today, June 13, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., for information about National Time Out Day and the chance to win an iPod shuffle.
