Carol Luppi, BSN, RN, nurse educator for Technology, organized an inside look at nursing for four Madison Park High School students during last week’s Job Shadow Day.
Luppi and her colleagues were joined by 10 other BWHers from departments across the hospital who volunteered to host 20 students during Job Shadow Day. “The event was a huge success,” said Carlen Singmaster, special events coordinator. “The students learned about all kinds of careers in health care, from respiratory therapy and physical therapy to radiology, nursing and cardiac perfusion, among many others.”
The four students shadowing Luppi performed a basic nursing assessment—including listening to heart and lung sounds—on the mannequin in the Nursing Simulation Center. They also administered medications to the mannequin using eMAR and the bar code scanner.
The students met with other members of the Center for Nursing Excellence, including Patrice Nicholas, DNSc, MPH, RN, APRN, BC, to learn about global nursing; Charlotte Messinger, BSN, RN, to discuss nursing practice and view nurse recognition videos; and Dorothy Bradley, MS, RN, to learn how to apply to nursing school. The students also had a tour of a mother-baby unit in the Connors Center for Women’s Health.
Launched jointly by the Boston Private Industry Council and the Boston Public Schools in 1996, Groundhog Job Shadow Day was established to introduce Boston students to the world of work. The Boston Private Industry Council is a business-led intermediary organization that connects the youth and adults of Boston to education and employment opportunities. BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, is chair of the Boston Private Industry Council.
