A new energy-saving initiative led by Partners IS will reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing more than 2,000 cars from the road each year.
“SavePower! is good for the environment and requires minimal effort from staff,” said Sue Schade, BWH’s vice president of IS.
Through SavePower!, computer monitors at private work stations will go into stand-by mode after they are inactive for 30 minutes. Monitors in stand-by mode will display a black screen with an orange status light. Employees simply can touch the mouse or keyboard to wake the monitor. IS begins the roll out on Feb. 11 and expects to reach all private work stations within two weeks.
Later this year, both monitors and computers will be included, reducing Partners-wide energy costs by approximately $1.4 million.
Properly logging off your computer will make this successful. At the end of the workday, employees should save and close all open documents and files, click the yellow lock and then the new user button.
Partners IS strongly recommends leaving your computer on to ensure nightly network updates. The energy saved by leaving your computer on and letting it go into stand-by mode is comparable to shutting down the computer, while also reducing the time spent powering on and logging in.
