Allen L. Smith, MD, MS, this summer was appointed president of the Brigham and Women’s Physicians Organization. He had been the BWPO’s chief medical officer since 2004.
“Allen is a proven leader and valuable asset to the senior leadership of the BW/F,” said BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA. “Equally important, he is a recognized physician leader in PCHI and at PHS.”
BWPO Chairman Steven Seltzer, MD, added, “Allen has demonstrated a commitment to leading the BWPO in building on our foundation of service to our patients, their families and our own physicians as well as our physician partners in the community.”
As the PO’s chief medical officer during the last three years, Smith has led strategic efforts in network development, medical management and contracting. He has played a crucial role on building and fortifying relationships with BWH and PO affiliates, the government, payors and other organizations that contribute to the success of BWH clinical programs and academic departments.
“During his time here at BWH, Allen has provided inspired leadership to our distributed campus vision, innovative programs to support our physicians and key medical management projects including Plan and Promise,” Gottlieb said.
Before joining BWH in 2004, Smith was medical director of the largest Medicare Advantage plan in New England at Tufts Health Plan. While at Tufts, he also served as assistant vice president for strategy and business. Prior to that, he was a primary care physician at North Shore Medical Center.
