Aliesha Wisdom got her foot in the door at BWH through the Human Resources’ storefront location on Huntington Avenue. Wisdom walked into the HR office and met with Hector Colon, the community liaison, to learn about options at BWH and apply for a job. Just two weeks later, she met with a manager in the Emergency Department, where she began working as an emergency service assistant two months ago.
“This helps with my schooling because I’m getting a lot of experience,” said Wisdom, a senior nursing student at Fitchburg State College. “I learned about the office from a friend who got a job at BWH. I have suggested that others go to the office because it’s easy to go right in and talk with someone.”
Wisdom is one of many Boston residents working at BWH who came in through HR’s satellite office in Mission Hill just steps away from Francis Street. Since opening last November, the office has received more than 2,000 visits, and more than 1,200 people have applied for jobs.
Senior HR assistant Elizabete DeMoura is among the office staff. “I answer questions applicants have about specific positions and direct them to positions if they do not have a job in mind,” she said.
The storefront HR office offers members of the community the chance to work directly with an HR representative to review open positions within BWH. “We assist the applicant with applying online, screen candidates and make the appropriate referral to a recruiter and/or community agencies,” said Beverley Sobers, director of Workforce Development at BWH. If applicants need more skills to be qualified for a position, HR connects them with training at Project Hope, a local non-profit agency that provides residents with job readiness training, skills and case management support.
Sobers is working to get the word out in the neighborhoods to recruit more community applicants. “The goal of the store front location is to provide easy access for our employees, swing space for HR staff to meet with physicians and interview applicants and to offer a point of access for community residents seeking employment within the hospital,” she said. “The hospital is partnering with Project Hope to facilitate outreach efforts with community groups focused on attending job fairs to get people on board.”
