Indiana Burgo, lead patient care assistant of the PACU, and Alba Garcia, a medical assistant at Brookside Community Health Center, are well-known among their colleagues for providing excellent patient care support, mentoring others and knowing how to work as part of a team. Last week, they were honored by the Department of Patient Care Services and the Center for Nursing Excellence at an awards recognition luncheon.
“When patients come to this institution and get this amazing care, they get the best because of the team. Each and every one of you makes this happen,” Mairead Hickey, PhD, RN, chief nursing officer and senior vice president of Patient Care Services, told Garcia, Burgo and the 23 nominees from departments across the hospital gathered at the luncheon.
“For me, patient needs come first, and my personal mission is to be there for them,” said Burgo, an aspiring nurse who was named Lead PCA of the Year. “I have observed this from my mentors at BWH—doctors and nurses who show me what I want to be.”
Garcia, who aims to become an OB/GYN nurse, takes family planning courses and shares her knowledge with teens. She also enjoys working with pregnant women and watching young babies grow.
“Alba has this inner strength, and no matter what’s going on in her life, she always cares for patients,” said Beth Scanlan, MSN, NP, RNC, of Brookside.
