The BWH Division of Preventive Medicine gathered with family and friends last week to recognize Eileen Bowes and Geneva McNair, the first recipients of a special honor: the Malcolm C. Taylor Award for Exceptional Kindness and Generosity.
The award is named for Malcolm C. Taylor, former administrator of the Division of Preventive Medicine, who passed away last year. He is remembered for his kindness, compassion and humility, which are the criteria for award recipients.
“This award will be an enduring tribute to Malcolm in our division,” said JoAnn Manson, MD, DrPH, chief of Preventive Medicine. “Already the award has sparked us to express appreciation and gratitude where otherwise we may have remained silent.”
Bowes, an operations coordinator, and McNair, a data information coordinator, were touched by the nominations from their colleagues, who applauded as Manson presented Bowes and McNair with a plaque, desk crystal and gift certificate.
“This means a lot to me,” Bowes said. “Malcolm would put a smile or two on my face each and every day, no matter how hectic and crazy it would get. He was very special.”
Taylor’s sister, Janis Kidney, who attended the ceremony, was touched that the award had been created and said that the recipients are truly deserving of it.
Ellie Danielson, senior project manager, who has worked with both recipients for nearly 20 years, agreed. “We play Scrabble everyday at lunch,” she said. “It’s such a friendly atmosphere with them.”
