When a young patient in the MICU was dying, Jackie Feeney, RN, took the time to comfort not only the patient’s family, but also the medical resident caring for the patient. “It was really hard for me,” said Anne Liu, MD. “I appreciated her helping me.”
Feeney, who residents say knows “everything about her patients and their families,” was among 13 nurses honored with Housestaff Nursing Awards for serving as mentors to residents.
“We wanted to thank not only the nominees, but all of the nurses we work with,” said Jill Gelow, MD, who coordinated last week’s event. “Working with you is what makes our experience so great.”
Residents cited examples of those experiences as they introduced each award winner. Megan Coholan, RN, of Tower 14, for example, showed residents the true meaning of compassion as she continued to visit one of her patients even after he was transferred to intensive care, bringing him the Boston Herald sports section he asked for.
This year’s event included a new award presented to a member of Admitting. Helen Bagley received this year’s Admitting award. In addition, residents announced that the Care Coordination award would be named in honor of Lynn Rodriguez, RN, CCM, a Care Coordination nurse and past recipient of this award who passed away in January. This award went to Lynne Lenoir, RN.
This year’s recipients were Robert Benvenuti, RN, Colleen Demar, RN, Loretta Pietrzak, RN, Megan Coholan, RN, Jill Martin, RN, Jackie Feeney, RN, Robert Fine, RN, Ana Barros, RN, Lynne Lenoir, RN, Faulkner Hospital’s Suzanne Devitt, RN, Pat Connolly, RN, and Sharon Regan, RN, Magalie Jean-Marie of the VA, and Helen Bagley of Admitting.
