JoAnn E. Manson, MD, DrPH, chief of the Division of Preventive Medicine, this month published “Hot Flashes, Hormones and Your Health,” a book that helps women determine whether hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is their best option to safely and effectively manage menopause.
“There’s a great need for reliable and accessible information to help women navigate the menopause transition and make informed decisions about hormone therapy and other options,” Manson said.
In her book, Manson provides expert advice about the benefits and risks of managing menopausal symptoms with hormone therapy. Although taking estrogen alone or in combination with progestogen can increase risk of developing breast cancer or cardiovascular disease in some women, factors such as age, time since menopause, personal and family health history and lifestyle also influence women’s health outcomes on HRT. This book offers information, including a step-by-step flowchart, to help women decide if they are good candidates for HRT and for maximizing the gains from treatment while minimizing the risks.
“Women need answers tailored to their individual health profile, as there’s no one size fits all solution to the hormone therapy quandary,” Manson said.
