The BWH NICU Strollers made a successful showing in the March of Dimes Walk America event.
The BWH NICU Strollers raised more than $3500 during the March of Dimes Walk America event, an annual fundraiser that supports the fight against premature births, birth defects and infant mortality. Twelve BWH nurses and staff, and nearly 100 BWH NICU graduates joined the stroll Sunday.
Marla and Jeffrey Wolk and their children, Ian and Oliver, the official ambassador family of the 2006 event, wore special, homemade T-shirts for the event, which on the back listed the many BWHers who helped saved Ian and Oliver’s lives almost three years ago as “mommy and daddy’s heroes.”
Families of deceased BWH babies also joined the march to express the appreciation for the compassionate care they received in the NICU and honor the memory of their children. “Seeing these families come support BWH really warmed my heart,” Sandra Harmon, RN, NICU assistant nurse manager, said. “As hard as it must have been for them, they were able to recognize and support an important cause.”
BWH plans to participate in the 2007 March of Dimes Walk America, and BWH families are already asking about next year’s event. “I think parents loved to see BWH represented at this special event,” Paul Hughes, administrative director in Newborn Medicine, said. “It seems this is a NICU tradition in the making.”
