BWH salutes its highly skilled Department of Respiratory Care during National Respiratory Care Week Oct. 23-29. Under Director Paul Nuccio, RRT, FAARC, about 55 respiratory therapists work in adult areas throughout the hospital and 15 concentrate their skills in the NICU, while an equipment specialist maintains the department's large inventory of complex machinery. The department also is committed to teaching-dozens of college students train at BWH each semester.
Vital members of the patient care team, respiratory therapists are available to all patient care areas, but spend the bulk of their time working in the intensive care units caring for patients on ventilators and responding to high-risk deliveries in the neonatal areas and emergency resuscitation calls. Respiratory therapists also provide specialized care of adult patients with cystic fibrosis.
