More than 200 BWHers, patients, family and friends showed heart on Saturday as they joined the American Heart Association’s 2006 Boston Heart Walk.
“Thanks to everyone who turned out for the Heart Walk and everyone who supported the team,” said BWH Team Captain Scott Taylor of IS. “We have raised $40,000 so far, and we expect that number to climb as donations keep coming in.”
More than 8,000 people participated in this year’s walk on the Charles River Esplanade. Walkers enjoyed free food and give-aways, warm weather and the satisfaction of raising money for a good cause. The money raised supports cardiovascular research, advocacy and education at Boston hospitals, including BWH.
“All of us at BWH appreciate your recognition of the outstanding work done by the American Heart Association and thank you for your support of a mission that links directly to ours at BWH,” said BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA.
Team BWH this year was outfitted in red T-shirts that read “I ? Brigham and Women’s Hospital.” The T-shirts are identical to the ones created for BWH’s 1984 press conference after the hospital completed the first and second heart transplants in New England. The shirts were recreated for this year’s walk because BWH celebrated another important milestone in heart transplants in December 2005: the 500th heart transplant.
