Partners HealthCare stepped up to the plate in support of Boston’s anti-poverty agency, Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD), during the ninth annual ABCD Field of Dreams benefit softball game. The Partners team—24 physicians, nurses and others from BWH and MGH—took on “The Outlaws” Friends of ABCD, resulting in a 3-3 tie. Partners was declared the winner based on number of hits, and runs were scored by BWH’s Peter Brown and MGH’s Joe Betancourt, MD, and Henry Chueh, MD.
Last week’s game at Fenway Park benefits ABCD and its SummerWorks program, which provides jobs, education, mentoring and tutoring for low-income, at-risk Boston teenagers. ABCD serves approximately 100,000 low-income Boston families and individuals by providing fuel assistance, day care, job training and other services. Partners HealthCare Community Benefit Programs provides funding for the event, which has raised more than $1 million for anti-poverty programs over the past eight years.
Led by Patrick O’Gara, MD, the BWHers on the team were Ted Alyea, MD; JudyAnn Bigby, MD; Peter Brown; John Fernandez; Stephen Ferzoco, MD; Patrick Gilligan; Michael Mufson, MD; Allen Smith, MD; Eytan Szmuilowicz, MD; and George Thibault, MD.
