A preschool class of four-year-olds has made a special donation to the NICU.
The 16 students in Newton’s Leventhal-Sidman Jewish Community Center preschool each week bring in nickels, dimes and quarters in honor of the Sabbath and as part of a lesson about charity. At the end of the year, the students choose a worthy cause to present with their collection. Last year’s class adopted two cheetahs with their money, and this year’s class unanimously voted to help NICU patients.
“Because some of them had been NICU babies, or they had siblings in the NICU, they decided this is where their money belongs,” said Steven Ringer, MD, PhD, director of Newborn Medicine.
Robin Goldenson, MD, of Radiology, whose daughter is among the przoolers, informed Ringer of the class decision, and he personally accepted the $125 donation.
“I was so excited about this generous gift that I wanted to come to the school to thank the preschoolers,” Ringer said. During his visit, he presented a slide show of sick and healthy babies to show the students how important their gift is, and what a difference charity makes.
