Former New England Patriots linebacker Ted Johnson made a surprise guest appearance at the 2006 Sports Related Conference on Concussion and Spine Injury, presented by the BWH Neurological Sports Injury Center and Harvard Medical School in partnership with the May Institute. Johnson shared his own experiences with football injuries?—?which eventually led to his retirement last year?—?with more than 250 athletic directors, athletic trainers, physicians, emergency medical technicians, nurses and others who attended last Friday’s conference at Fenway Park.
Speakers included BWH’s Arthur Day, MD, neurosurgeon and director of the Neurological Sports Injury Center, and the center’s co-directors, Robert Cantu, MD, and Mark Proctor, MD. Sports-related head or spine injuries can change an athlete’s life forever. Presentations focused on athletes’ return-to-play decisions following injuries; medical treatment and surgery for head and spine injuries; neuropsychological testing; and on-field management of spine injuries.
“The depth of these presentations and the expertise of our speakers benefited participants, who play an important role in preventing and responding to athletes’ injuries,” Day said.
