Elaine Garland, administrative coordinator, Volunteer Services, really knows how to step up to the plate and pitch in for a good cause. As a member of the hospital’s Staff Activities Committee, Garland volunteers her time to help organize BWH events such as Street Beat and On My Own Time. She often forgoes her lunch break to sell popular Perks tickets, helping employees take advantage of specially discounted admission to Boston Red Sox games. Lucky for her, all the time spent pitching in really paid off. Garland was selected in a BWH drawing to do some real pitching – on the mound at Fenway Park.
On July 24, Garland bypassed the bleacher seats at Fenway and made her way straight for the diamond. As the announcer proudly welcomed her to the mound, Garland took a deep breath and wound up her pitching arm. While many fortunate fans invited to throw the first pitch at Fenway may have spent time working on their fast ball, Garland devoted her preparation to selecting the right outfit. She carefully crafted a Sox uniform that incorporated every bit of Brigham Blue she could find.
Although the Sox lost to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays that night, the game was a big win for a special employee.
