BWH NICU alumni Marla and Jeffrey Wolk and their twins, Ian and Oliver, are the official Massachusetts ambassadors for the 2006 March of Dimes Walk America.
The BWH NICU and its alumni families are poised to make a strong showing at the March of Dimes Walk America event. The annual Boston walk steps off from the Hatch Shell at the Charles River Esplanade at noon April 30, and walkers and supporters are encouraged to join the BWH NICU Strollers before and after the event.
For this year's walk, NICU alumni Marla and Jeffrey Wolk and their twins, Ian and Oliver, who were born at 26 weeks in July 2003, are serving as the official ambassador family. The 2006 Walk America event marks the debut of the BWH NICU Strollers at the annual fund raiser for the national organization that leads the fight against premature births, birth defects and infant mortality.
Marla Wolk credits the team at the BWH NICU with providing excellent, life-saving care to her family. The March of Dimes and Walk America connected the Wolks with families in similar situations when they were feeling isolated and alone. "If it wasn't for the phenomenal team at BWH and the many innovations funded by March of Dimes research, our story of triumph could very well have been one of great tragedy," she said. "I am thrilled these two great organizations are coming together at this walk."
The NICU is tapping clinical staff, managers and other supporters to join the BWH NICU Strollers to raise money by joining the April 30 walk, or by making a contribution.
"Both the BWH NICU and the March of Dimes share a common mission of ending premature births, and we work together to provide babies born prematurely with the safest and healthiest of starts," Sandra Harmon, RN, NICU assistant nurse manager, said.
In addition to fielding a team of walkers, the NICU is inviting more than 3,000 alumni families to join them for a reunion on the day of the walk at the Hatch Shell at the Charles River, where the walk begins and ends.
