The 129 members of Team Brigham have hit the ground running this year, en route toward reaching the team's highest fund-raising goal yet: $500,000.
As they train for the April 17 Boston Marathon, the runners are working to ensure they meet their goal, which benefits community health programs offered by BWH.
"It takes a considerable amount of money to run such a wide variety of programs that affect so many people in the community," said Jennifer Allison, assistant director of the Office for Women, Family and Community Programs. "Overall, we provide a lot of crucial direct services to people in need, as well as some very unique opportunities for local students." Such programs include Passageway, which provides free assistance to patients and employees experiencing domestic violence, and the Student Success Jobs Program, which pairs Boston high school students with mentors at BWH and gives them hands-on experience in health care through paid internships.
If anyone can meet such an ambitious goal, it's Team Brigham, which boasts a solid fund-raising track record from its dedicated runners. Last year, the team exceeded its goal of $400,000 by more than $10,000 for BWH's community programs.
The team is supported greatly by the BWH community in its fund-raising and training efforts. The Development Office helps the team meet its financial goals, for example. And this year, Reg Wilcox III, PT, DPT, MS, clinical supervisor of Rehabilitation Services, is the go-to person for physical therapy related to running injuries or stress. Wilcox and Courtney Reed, PT, senior physical therapist in Rehabilitation Services, attended a February team meeting to brief the team on common running injuries and strategies for prevention as they train for the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston.
This year, 15 BWHers join Team Brigham, in addition to several employees of Partners, Spaulding Rehabilitation and Children's Hospital. For the seventh year, Deloitte and Touche runners join Team Brigham in memory of their co-worker Ellen Gabriel, who waged a courageous battle against breast cancer. Team Brigham includes runners from California, New York, Colorado, Maryland, New Jersey, New Hampshire and even Ireland. Visit www.brighamandwomens.org/teambrigham for more information.
