Charles A. Vacanti, MD, a renowned anesthesiologist and pioneer in the field of tissue engineering research, has been named chairman of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine. He assumes this new role on September 15. Vacanti will succeed Simon Gelman, MD, who retired in June after leading the department for 10 years.
Vacanti comes to BWH from the UMass Medical Center in Worcester, where he served as chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology and professor of anesthesiology and surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Previously, Vacanti was a research associate at both MIT and Children’s Hospital Boston. He also served as an anesthesiologist for more than 10 years at MGH, where he founded the hospital’s laboratory for tissue engineering.
“Dr. Vacanti’s exceptional experience and groundbreaking accomplishments, both as an anesthesiologist and a researcher, will be an important asset for our institution,” said BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA. “His presence will provide additional depth and expertise to an already outstanding Anesthesia Department.”
Vacanti is a nationally and internationally known lecturer who has published more than 200 journal articles, book chapters, reviews and abstracts. In addition to his research initiatives, he has been granted seven patents in the field of tissue engineering, with more than a dozen pending. Vacanti also serves as the emeritus governor of the Tissue Engineering Society, an organization he co-founded.
Vacanti received a bachelor of science degree from Creighton University and his medical degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. He completed his internship in surgery and his residency at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont.
