Hilarie Cranmer, MD, MPH, FACEP, of the Division of International Health and Humanitarian Programs, in the Department of Emergency Medicine and of the newly formed Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, will deliver the keynote address at the seventh annual Dennis Thomson Leadership and Compassionate Care Scholar Awards Celebration on March 30. Cranmer has brought direct health care to Indonesian people devastated by the massive tsunami of December 2004 and helped the American Red Cross plan the Hurricane Katrina response in the Gulf Coast area. In addition to Cranmer's remarks, this year's Thomson Leadership Award and the Compassionate Care Scholar Awards will be presented. The awards are given in remembrance of the late Dennis Thomson, who was widely known by his peers as "the conscience of BWH." Thomson served as BWH's director and then vice president of Public Affairs from 1991 to 1998, overseeing all internal communications and external media outreach. He died at the age of 49 on Nov. 10, 1998, following a battle with cancer. The Leadership Award is presented to a staff member who exemplifies leadership as defined by Thomson. The Compassionate Care Scholar Awards recognize employees from any discipline who embody the principles of compassion in their daily work and exemplify it most at the bedside of patients. The awards presentation celebration is March 30 at 4 p.m. in the Bornstein Amphitheater.
