Mary Lou Moore, RN, MSN, nurse manager on Tower 12, was honored with the prestigious Excellent Nurse Manager award from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). The award recognizes nurse managers who exemplify the AACN's vision of ethical care and make education a priority for critical care nurses.
Moore was nominated by Paul Sedgwick, RN, 12D, after he and colleagues learned of the award at last year's National Teaching Institute conference. "I watched the presentation of awards at this conference, thinking to myself none of these people have anything on Mary Lou," Sedgwick said.
As manager on Tower 12, Moore manages four pods with 56 beds, including three step-down units, the Cardiac Critical Care Unit and the Cardioversion Program. Nearly 160 nurses report to her, along with 40 patient care assistants and 20 unit coordinators. According to her staff, Moore's positive, enthusiastic attitude and unwavering composure make her an inspiration to everyone, and she clearly exhibits the qualities associated with this award.
Moore will receive the award at the AACN's National Teaching Insitute in California in May. The AACN is the world's largest specialty nursing organization representing more than 400,000 critical care nurses.
