Once again the BWH Blood Donor Center is teaming up with their colleagues at MGH to conduct the third annual BWH and MGH Blood Donor Challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to grow the hospital’s blood supply, while encouraging employees to donate. This year’s event will focus on employee appreciation.
BWH and MGH are both competing against their respective record from last year. “We are hoping to break our own record and best last year’s performance,” said Linda Perry, lead blood donor recruiter. BWH is looking to collect at least 200 units of blood, while MGH is aiming for 400 units.
Throughout the summer, blood supply drops due to the increase in accidents, explained Perry, and by fall, historically, there is a greater risk of clinical shortage.
Last year BWH collected 232 units of blood, which is equivalent to 464 adult patient transfusions. “One unit of blood could help up to five babies, some of whom receive their transfusions even before they are born,” said Perry.
The BWH and MGH Blood Donor Challenge relies heavily on hospital employees. To encourage participation, the Blood Donor Center has organized a cluster of events and raffles to benefit and reward those whose donations save many lives. “We just want to have fun and get the greatest possible blood supply from both hospitals,” said Perry.
Events include an ice cream party, a deli lunch, a bagel breakfast and much more. Additionally, employees have the chance to win gift certificates to local shops, restaurants and special events.
The BWH and MGH Blood Donor Challenge runs August 20 through September 6. All blood types are needed.
