Son's Wedding Videoconferenced to BWH
Here's to a creative and compassionate care team who went to great lengths for its patient.
When a heart condition landed Teresa Nichols on Tower 12A several weeks ago, she realized she would be unable to attend her son's New Gloucester, Maine, wedding. However, her dedicated care team of physicians, nurses and a social worker found a way to bring the wedding to BWH.
Last Friday night, Cathy Saniuk, MS, RN, CCRN, and Rebecca Lindo, RN, BSN, escorted Nichols and her significant other Steve to the Thorn Building, where Partners Videoconference Manager Courtney Trautman set up a videoconference with the Maine reception hall. No detail escaped the wedding-savvy nurses, who completed the celebration with a bottle of champagne (approved by Nichols' physician), sparkling apple cider and chocolate cake, along with plenty of tissues for the mother of the groom. Nurse Practitioner Colleen Smith worked beforehand with Nichols' son and Trautman to make the technical arrangements with support from Drs. Gilbert Mudge and Gregory Couper.
A day of beauty preceded the event, including a trip to Bojacks Hair Salon in the Longwood Galleria with Nurse Pactitioner Linda James. To complete Nichols' look, Social Worker Christine Dolan presented her with a corsage designed by the BWH Gift Shop.
After the wedding ceremony, Nichols' son, his new bride and several of Nichols' grandchildren went to a room equipped with videoconferencing technology so they could see and talk to Nichols, who waited with her BWH family in Thorn. Nichols cracked jokes with her son, welcomed her new daughter-in-law into the family and admired her wedding dress before toasting the newlyweds.
