In honor of Medical Librarian's Month, the NIH National Library of Medicine has designated The Michele and Howard Kessler Health Education Library in BWH’s Bretholtz Center as one of three notable New England consumer health libraries for its resources and services for people with disabilities. The Kessler Library used a LSTA technology grant received from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners to make health information accessible for people with a variety of disabilities. Staff and volunteers now assist library users on an adaptive workstation with special keyboards and trackballs, through large-print web and Intranet page portals for library information, a Books-by-Mail program, Books-on-Tape, Braille, TTY telephone and print magnification devices. “We invite BWH staff, patients, families and the community to find out more about these new ways for people with disabilities to research health information,” said Cara Helfner, program manager, Kessler Library. To learn more, stop by the library’s open house Thursday, October 21, 11 a.m.- 6 p.m., or call 617-732-8013 (TTY 617-525-7337).
