A team of BWH clinicians had the opportunity to share the exciting aspects of their careers in the classrooms of the Maurice J. Tobin School last week. Their efforts were part of the Tobin’s second annual Health Career Day.
“The kids are always very excited to have one-on-one interaction with physicians, nurses and other health care providers. The experience also makes the concept of being a health care professional a little more tangible for them,” said Amy Belyea, youth program manager, BWH Office for Women, Family and Community Programs.
Sasha Stasko, DDS (pictured with students), spoke to a third grade class about being a dentist. Stasko kept the students interest by passing around items such as wax dentures and fake teeth to generate questions. “The children were very receptive to what I had to share with them. They also seemed to be intrigued with all the items that I brought for show-and-tell. I would be honored to have the opportunity to speak with a group of children again,” said Stasko, who gave the children goodie-bags donated by Crest.
The team of BWH clinicians who joined Stasko to volunteer their time for the event included Fidencio Saldana, MD; Brandon Brown; Cindy Lemere, PhD; Ellen Sullivan Chace, RN; Pearl Cunningham, RN; Darlene Smith, RN; Brian O’Callahan, RN; Robin Beal; and Surya Singh, MD.
