An end of the year celebration was held on June 12 to honor the 18 students involved in the Student Success Jobs Partnership (SSJP) at BWH. The SSJP is a two-year program, funded by the Balfour Foundation, that provides sophomore, junior and senior high school students with the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally through a hospital internship. As employees of BWH, students are able to explore the hospital’s many departments and learn more about the diversified careers available to them in the health care industry.
A key component of SSJP program is mentorship. To create continuity throughout the two years, each student is assigned a mentor, who facilitates the student’s individual development. Nellie Knight, the SSJP project coordinator, works with the mentors and supervises the students on a regular basis. Each month, the group comes together to participate in seminars offered on a variety of topics such as banking, budgeting and college preparation.
“It is wonderful to observe the tremendous development in these students throughout the varying stages of the program,” said Knight. “We are extremely grateful to all staff and employees who give themselves and their time to mentor our students and make this experience such a rewarding one.”
