“Volunteers Meet the Challenge”
Maureen Allen and Kathleen Howard, lactation consultants, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, were awarded the Sixth Annual Lily Kravitz Nursing Studies Award on Thursday, May 4, to do a study to evaluate the effectiveness of telephone follow-up for breastfeeding support after discharge from the NICU. They hope to show that intensive support will help new mothers transition from the hospital to the home with less stress, and will encourage them to continue breastfeeding their infants. Said Nursing Vice President Mary S. Fay, NR, MS, “One of the advantages of the Lily Kravitz Nursing Studies Award is that it encourages nurses with excellent ideas to begin thinking about doing research to solve a problem or explore an issue that is important to clinical nursing practice. “The Nursing Department is committed to helping the nursing staff to do research that will enhance the quality of nursing care that we provide,” added Fay. “This will be one of the central aims of the Center for Excellence in Nursing Practice as it continues to develop with the support of our generous benefactors.” The award is made possible through the generosity of Dr. Arthur Kravitz and his family in honor of his mother, Lucy Kravitz, whose life epitomized the highest ideals of the nursing profession. It is intended to support research or clinical projects initiated by the nursing staff to improve the care of patients and their families.
