BWH supporters in Florida had a chance to meet newly named hospital President Gary Gottlieb, MD, during a series of events sponsored by BWH in Palm Beach last weekend. President Jeffrey Otten joined Gottlieb, as did several BWH doctors who participated in a variety of events over the three days.
During a reception at the Brazilian Court Hotel on Friday, February 8, Gottlieb thanked guests for their ongoing philanthropy. “Our doctors are making great medicine every day at Brigham and Women’s Hospital,” said Gottlieb, who takes office March 1. “They couldn’t do it without the tremendous support of our major donors.”
Gottlieb said $95.5 million has already been raised toward the $200-million capital campaign—the largest and most ambitious fundraising effort in the hospital’s history. Donations include a new gift of $3.5 million from Carl and Ruth Shapiro of Boston and Palm Beach. “We’re in an excellent position to continue down our path of success in patient care, teaching and research,” he said.
The following day, attendees had an opportunity to learn about bioterrorism and disaster preparedness at a seminar given by Ron Walls, MD, chairman of Emergency Medicine, and Richard Zane, MD, director of Prehospital Care and Emergency Medical Services. The doctors stressed the improbability of falling victim to an attack of anthrax, noting that Americans are 10,000 times more likely to contract the flu.
