Seasoned academic leader and hospital executive Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, has been chosen to succeed Jeffrey Otten, as president of BWH. In November, Otten announced his intention to step down after nearly nine years at the hospital. Gottlieb’s appointment is effective on March 1.
“I consider it a great honor to serve as the next president of Brigham and Women’s Hospital,” said Gottlieb. “As one of the nation’s premier academic medical centers, I am well aware of the enormous impact that our physicians, nurses, researchers and employees can have on the health and well being of all people in Boston and throughout the world. While hospitals and health care organizations continue to be challenged on a variety of fronts, I am confident that BWH will be well prepared to meet those challenges in future.”
In addition to serving as president of BWH, Gottlieb will serve as president of Brigham and Women’s/Faulkner Hospitals (BW/F) and as a member of the BWH and BW/F Boards of Trustees.
After Otten announced his intention to step down as BWH president, Chairman of BWH’s Board of Trustees Michael Bell began the search for Otten’s replacement, which has resulted in Gottlieb’s appointment.
“I am delighted that Gary has accepted this opportunity to lead BWH in the new century,” said Bell. “His impressive strengths as a leader, administrator and physician will allow the hospital to build upon its strong legacy of success. I am confident that Gary will continue BWH’s deep commitment to quality patient care, research and academic excellence, while maintaining unwavering support for the community we serve.”
Gottlieb currently serves as the chairman of the Partners Psychiatry and Mental Health System and Professor of Psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School, a position he has held since 1998. From 2000 to 2001, Gottlieb served as president of Partners-affiliated North Shore Medical Center.
A noted administrator, teacher and academic leader, Gottlieb is widely regarded as a national expert on geriatric psychiatry. Previously, Gottlieb served as executive vice chair and interim chair of Psychiatry and associate dean for Managed Care at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. Just prior to relocating to Boston, he was director and chief executive officer of Friends Hospital in Philadelphia, the nation’s first freestanding not-for-profit psychiatric hospital.
Gottlieb earned his bachelors degree, cum laude, from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and his medical degree from Albany Medical College of Union University in a six-year accelerated biomedical program. He was a resident and chief resident in psychiatry at NYU/Bellevue Medical Center and he earned a masters of business administration, with distinction, from the Wharton Graduate School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania while serving as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar at Penn.
“Gary’s strengths as an administrator, researcher, teacher and advocate will serve the community well,” said Partners HealthCare System President and Chief Executive Officer, Samuel O. Thier, MD. “It is clear that he has the rare ability to look beyond the present. We look forward to his leadership at the helm of BWH.”
