The BWH Blood Donor Center, a Joint Program in Transfusion Medicine member, is working on a Mobile Blood Drive Sponsor campaign to help meet patients’ transfusion needs—about 60,000 transfusions each year—by driving directly to locations of eligible volunteers.
According to Linda Perry, lead recruiter, BWH Blood Donor Center, the major obstacle to healthy, eligible volunteers donating blood is time. The mobile campaign is an effort to save time for the donors by conducting blood drives at the location of a sponsor willing to provide a large room and at least 30 volunteers.
Perry said the mobile blood drive team goes to the workplace, community groups, churches and synagogues. BWH also works with schools, colleges and the Boy Scouts. “We need to educate the public, especially young people, on the need for blood. Blood drives are wonderful community service projects, and we make our drives fun and convenient.”
