PIKE NOTES
At last count, MGH was winning the BWH-MGH Blood Donor Center Challenge by 128-88. But don’t worry—there’s one week left to donate, and that week can make all the difference. BWH’s Blood Donation Recruiter Linda Perry feels strongly that BWH can still win the contest. “We just need more people to come in and more departments to sign up to donate as a team,” she says. “We’ve had employees come in from many different departments, and they have had a lot of fun. As the results so far show, the response has been great in both hospitals.” A “Challenge 2000” t-shirt will be given to all BWH employees who participate in the contest, and pizza will be given out during lunchtime on certain days. A plaque will be given to the winning Donor Center, who will then have to do their best to be the reigning “champs” the following year. The BWH-MGH competition, which has run since August 28 and will run only until September 15, is a challenge to see which hospital’s employees can donate the most blood over a three-week period. The ultimate winners of this competition will be the patients in both hospitals, who will receive donated blood at a time of year when supplies are exceptionally low. Perry stresses that although blood donation is essential to hospitals year-round, this particular time of year makes the need absolutely critical. The end of the summer is a time of year when blood supplies historically become low in hospitals and blood banks across the country.
