Ethics and ethical considerations are closely interwoven into nursing practice and Ms. Muir’s essay illustrates this. The ability to see problems from many perspectives such as the question of who would or would not undergo bone marrow transplantion is a quality required for excellent nursing practice as well as keen ethical discernment. We take seriously our role as patient advocates, and this is clearly demonstrated in Ms. Muir’s touching and sensitive essay. The ability to appreciate the importance of the details of a person’s life as a patient, are at the heart of translating the abstract principles of ethics—doing good (beneficence), avoiding harm
(nonmaleficence) and respecting patient-centered decision-making (autonomy)—to excellence in nursing practice.
