Nurses Share Narratives with Expert
BWH nurses and staff spent the morning of Sept. 8 discussing clinical narratives with Patricia Benner, RN, PhD, FAAN, who has conducted extensive research on skill acquisition and clinical judgment in nursing practice. Following a Grand Rounds presentation on experiential learning and its importance in developing nursing practice, Benner discussed the clinical narratives of four BWH nurses. Kate Hanley of the Neurosurgical ICU, Lillian Enright of Labor, Birth and Recovery, Diane Miller of the Thoracic ICU and Pauline Williams of the OR presented and discussed their narratives with Benner and their colleagues at this standing room-only event.
Benner's books and publications, translated in many languages, have won several awards, including the 2001 Book of the Year Award from the American Journal of Nursing for the Millennial Edition of From Novice to Expert: Excellence and Power in Clinical Nursing Practice.
