Neville Strumpf, PhD, RN, FAAN (pictured), and Lois Evans, DNSc, FAAN recently visited BWH as the 2003 Frances Donovan Nurse Scholars, a program supported by the Friends of BWH. Sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Nursing Practice, Drs. Strumpf and Evans presented on two lecture topics: “Debunking the Myth of Restraint Use” and “Restraint-Free Care for Hospitalized Elders.” They are leaders in promoting restraint-free care and wrote the book Restraint-Free Care: Individualized Approaches to Frail Elders. During their visit to Boston, Strumpf and Evans spoke at several Partners institutions including Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, The Institute for Health Professionas at MGH, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Their visit culminated with the presentation of their research on Restraint Free Care for Hospitalized Elders at combined Nursing and Medical Grand Rounds events at both Massachusetts General and BWH. The combined Grand Rounds event was the first time such a forum was utilized at Massachusetts General. And on the evening of February 27, the Boston gerontology and academic communities came together to recognize and thank Strumpf and Evans at a gala dinner hosted by BWH’s Center for Excellence in Nursing Practice. Both Strumpf and Evans are full professors at University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing where they direct the John A. Hartford Center for Gerontologic Nursing Excellence.
